The Perception of Parents and Educational Professionals on the Severity and Affects of Circumscribed Interests in Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of parents and educational professionals on the severity and affects of circumscribed interests in students with autism spectrum disorders. For these purpose, parents and educational professionals of 284 ASD students participated on the survey. The questionnaire for this study was developed based on the previous study and comments of educational professionals. The contents of the questionnaire were consisted with the severity, the function and affects, the expectation and concern of the parents and teachers toward the student¡¯s circumscribed special interest. The results are as follows: First, the severity of circumscribed special interests was very intense and everyday activities of students with ASD were interfered with special interest. Second, the participants considered that the main function of circumscribed interest was a source of pleasure, a part of play, and to overcome anxiety. However, immersion in special interest had negative affect on the students' development, family relationship, peer relationship and other interpersonal relationship. Third, it was mostly expected that these circumscribed special interest could be helpful in learning and development, and that it could be related to special talent. Based on this result, we discussed about the severity and affect of special interest.
